The Western Washington Mounted Shooters
By Jennifer Burnell
In mounted shooting contestants range in age from 3 to 93. There are two Wrangler divisions for the kids, and six adult divisions. The adult divisions are divided into Men’s and Ladies’ (ages 12-49) and Senior Men’s and Ladies’ (ages 50+). The sport is like barrel racing, but with guns. These are real .45 caliber single action revolvers, shooting specially prepared black powder blank ammunition that will break a balloon up to about 15 feet, so the event is safe for spectators.
Cowboy Mounted Shooting was introduced to the Pacific Northwest back in 2003 by Kenda Klein Lenseigne, formerly of Sultan, Washington. Kenda went on to win several world and national titles and now makes her home in Phoenix, Arizona where she trains both people and horses for Cowboy Mounted Shooting. There are now several Mounted Shooting clubs in the greater Pacific Northwest. Email us for a club near you: [email protected]
