Is your horse anxious, tense, or overly reactive?
Before reaching for a calming supplement, equine nutritionist Juliet M. Getty, Ph.D. recommends taking a closer look at the whole picture.
A horse's diet, environment, turnout, physical comfort, digestive health, social situation, training, and management can all influence behavior. No calming ingredient can compensate for an underlying problem that continues to make a horse uncomfortable or anxious.
But when those fundamentals are in place and a horse still needs additional support, certain nutritional ingredients may help.
In her newly updated article, “Calming the Anxious Horse: 4 Nutritional Ingredients to Consider,” Dr. Getty discusses:
• Magnesium • B vitamins, including thiamin • Ashwagandha • L-Theanine
She also explains what horse owners should know about L-tryptophan and why a calming supplement with a long ingredient list isn't necessarily better.
Most importantly, there isn't one calming ingredient that's right for every horse.
